In order to identify the best solution from a set of candidate solutions, assessment criteria need to be identified. Meaningful assessment criteria are established in collaboration with stakeholders and a team representing all relevant areas of expertise. Typically, the assessment criteria are based upon customer constraints, required performance characteristics, and/or costs.

Identify Key Performance Parameters (KPP)

Identify a set of KPPs for the scope under investigation. KPPs are objective measures of performance and typically relate to quality of service, reliability, tolerances of accuracy, and specific constraints relating to size or mass.

Identify stakeholder requirements

Identify the applicable stakeholder requirements for the area covered by the proposed solutions.

Translate KPPs and stakeholder requirements into assessment criteria

Determine appropriate assessment criteria based on the KPPs and stakeholder requirements identified in the previous steps. Assessment criteria normally are subjective but can also be very specific. A subjective target could be low cost. A specific target could be a precise measure of accuracy i.e. +/- 0.1 mm.

Create or update the Trade Study Report

Capture the assessment criteria in the Trade Study Report.
